A note from the British Chamber’s Managing Director
Dear Members and the British Business Community,
After six incredible years working alongside the British business community in China, I have decided to transition out of my role as Managing Director of the British Chamber of Commerce in China to pursue my next challenge and continue developing my career. To ensure a seamless transition, I have given our Board six months’ notice, allowing time to identify and onboard a strong successor.
The British Chamber has been a steadfast supporter of British businesses, championing our members through advocacy, knowledge, and community. I have been fortunate to be leading, driving and delivering these important pillars and the mission as the independent voice of British business in China. Since my first day at the Chamber in January 2019, it has been an honour to work with an incredibly dedicated team and a supportive and engaged Board. Together, we have grown the role of the Chamber to advocate for British business, overcome a pandemic, and navigated the new economic landscape of recent years. At each step we have always put our members at the heart of everything we do.
Over the past six years, we have accomplished significant milestones for our members. From enhancing our event offerings to expanding our advocacy efforts and representation in the UK-China bilateral relationship, we have continuously adapted to meet the needs of British companies in China. The strength of the Board and their active engagement have been instrumental in driving our mission forward. I extend my deep appreciation to the entire Board, who have consistently come together to craft and discuss strategies that ensure continuity and deliver for our community. I wish to give special thanks to Julian Fisher and Julian MacCormac who have served as Chair during my tenure as Managing Director and whose support and mentorship have been invaluable since I assumed the role.
As the first female Managing Director in the Chamber’s 43-year history, it has been a tremendous honour to lead this esteemed organisation. This role has granted me unparalleled professional and personal growth, as well as the confidence to represent the British business community in every encounter. I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to serve our vibrant and dynamic community in Beijing and across China. The lessons I’ve learned and the connections I’ve made will remain with me forever.
In the coming months, I remain steadfast in my commitment to serving our members and supporting the Chamber. With the formation of the new UK government just over a month ago, there is promising potential for enhanced engagement and exchange between the UK and China, creating exciting opportunities for our members. I assure you that I will continue to work diligently and passionately to foster the success of UK businesses until my final day.
Next week, we will begin the search for a strong successor who will build on the Chamber’s achievements and continue to drive our mission forward. This effort will be led by a committee established by the Board, with Chair Julian overseeing the process. Should you be interested in the role of Managing Director or know of a phenomenal candidate, please do let me and the Board know.
Thank you for the trust you have placed in me to lead the Chamber and for your invaluable support throughout this journey. As we look ahead to the coming months, I am excited about the opportunities that lie before us. I am committed to working closely with you to ensure a seamless transition and to lay a robust foundation for BritCham’s future. Together, we will build on our achievements and set the stage for a new chapter of leadership in 2025.
With all best wishes,
Rachel
