About The Role

Rio Tinto aims to be the best operator and developer in the mining sector, with impeccable Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) credentials and a strong licence to operate. Innovation will play an important role in achieving these objectives.

China’s capability on science, technology and engineering is considered an untapped resource for Rio Tinto. CTIC together with the whole ISTG team is trying to take the advantage of such resource to hit our own target.

The overarching objective of this role is to understand China’s capability in the area(s) of interest, monitor the progress made by China, identify business opportunities for Rio Tinto to leverage Chinese technologies to face our technical challenges and solve our problems.

Innovation, Science and Technology Group (ISTG) is a new team within Rio Tinto to strengthen the business of today and to grow the business of tomorrow by incubating and accelerating innovation.

China Technology and Innovation Centre, as part of the Innovation Office of ISTG is a China based team to help ISTG develop and maintain a good understanding of the potential technical opportunities and partners in each of these areas and to take action to realise the full potential of Chinese technology as technology has been identified as one of the three areas of opportunity for Rio Tinto in China that deliver value and reduce the risk position.

The position (Business Analyst –Technology and Innovation) reports to Principal Advisor Technology and Innovation will focus on monitoring the progress made by China in certain areas of interest, carrying out research to understand the industry and trying to identify business opportunities and foster partnership.

Reporting to the Principal Advisor Technology and Innovation, you will

  • Monitor the scientific and technological progress made by China in certain areas.
  • Carry out research on technologies of interest, industrial trend and forming relevant in-house insights.
  • Understand the technology demand from internal stakeholders and keep an eye on the China’s technology sector for business opportunities.
  • Lead engagement with internal and external partners on technology and innovation.
  • Provide insight into strategy, roadmap, and action plan for certain technology areas.
  • Support R&D project initiation and delivery

About You

To be successfully considered for this role, you will have

  • Bachelor’s degree or above in science or engineering
  • A background of one of the following subjects is preferred mining, mineral processing or metallurgy.
  • Working experience in research, analysis, engineering or science and technology management are preferred.
  • Good understanding of technology needed by metals and mining industry and the trends in relevant sectors
  • Critical and creative thinking
  • Collaborative team player, capable of working well with internal and external stakeholders
  • Self-motivated and proactive working style
  • Ability to communicate the insights via written deliverables or presentations
  • Good people and communication skills
  • Verbal and written fluency in both English and Mandarin

Where you will be working

You will be based in our office in Beijing.
