About the Chamber

The British Chamber of Commerce in China (BritCham) represents the interests of British businesses operating in China, providing advocacy, policy insight, and networking opportunities. We are seeking a talented Government Affairs Executive/Manager to join our team in Beijing. This role will focus on policy analysis, government engagement, and member support — with seniority determined by the candidate’s experience.

Roles & Responsibilities

Advocacy Reports, Initiatives & Presentations (50%)

The British Chamber tracks and provides policy recommendations across 10 industries (e.g. Agriculture, F&B, Education, Energy, Financial Services, Sport). The successful candidate will monitor policy updates, engage with stakeholders, and develop policy recommendations across three assigned sectors, based on their expertise and the team’s needs.

  • Draft industry or cross-sector contributions for the Chamber’s annual flagship British Business in China Position Paper and Sentiment Survey.
  • Organise and lead industry roundtables, sector-specific events, and member interviews to inform advocacy work.
  • Monitor and summarise major Chinese policy announcements and international developments relevant to British businesses.
  • Present advocacy findings to stakeholders, including the British and Chinese governments, and support the Executive Committee in shaping key messages.

Chinese Government Engagement (30%)

  • Serve as the primary working-level contact between the Chamber and key Chinese government stakeholders (e.g. MOFCOM, CCPIT, IDCPC).
  • Build and maintain relationships with other relevant ministries and entities aligned with advocacy priorities.
  • Liaise with government contacts to coordinate and facilitate meetings, ensuring smooth logistics.
  • Support colleagues in connecting with government bodies for sector-specific advocacy needs.
  • Provide occasional translation support during government meetings.

Membership, Events & Communications Support (20%)

  • Partner with the Membership Manager to identify and recruit potential members, especially in assigned sectors.
  • Manage and engage relationships with member companies and external stakeholders.
  • Support the Events Manager by recommending topics, speakers, and industry expertise for relevant events.
  • Assist the Marketing & Communications Manager with Chinese-language content, including drafting speeches and supporting media outreach.
  • Represent the Chamber at off-site events to gather policy insights, support member engagement, or explore new member recruitment opportunities.

Key Competencies & Attributes

  • Strong project management skills, including resource planning and the ability to deliver work to tight deadlines.
  • Proactive and self-motivated, with the confidence to take ownership of sector-specific initiatives and drive them forward.
  • Collaborative mindset, with a willingness to support colleagues beyond your immediate portfolio when needed.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, able to engage effectively with diverse stakeholders.
  • Genuine interest in China’s policy environment, demonstrated through study, experience, or past work.

The Ideal Candidate Will Have

  • Experience in public policy, government affairs, communications, NGO, or academia.
  • 2+ years’ experience for consideration as Executive; 5+ years’ experience for consideration as Manager.
  • A bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline.
  • Fluent English and native-level Chinese (spoken and written).
  • Strong research, analysis, and report-writing abilities.

Desirable Extras

  • A master’s degree in a relevant discipline, ideally with overseas study or work experience.
  • Experience working with senior stakeholders and engaging Chinese government entities.
  • Translation experience, either formal or ad hoc, in a professional setting.

What We Offer

  • Monthly salary: RMB 12,000–16,000 (commensurate with experience).
  • 25 days’ annual leave, plus Chinese national holidays and “catch-up” days off.
  • Trainyard Gym membership (Hotel Jen).
  • A dynamic working environment with freedom to propose and implement ideas.
  • Opportunities to build expertise in key industries and develop a strong professional network.
  • Mentorship from industry leaders on the BritCham Executive Committee.
